Overview:
The Art Detective encourages students to look at the world through an artist's eyes. This 1st-5th-grade Art Detective Lesson Plan Book includes 35 lessons that take kids on an art adventure every year. Each age-appropriate lesson plan introduces students to Art History, Criticism, and Production and is integrated across the curriculum. This spiraled curriculum guide builds on previous knowledge. Each lesson focuses on a different famous artist and an element of art. Students are then encouraged to personalize their own artwork inspired by each famous artist.
Language Literacy:
The Art Detective integrates language literacy by encouraging students to read, write, listen, and speak about their art and the art of others. Students are encouraged to participate in a short, small-group art critique using “I like” statements once projects are complete. Each lesson includes an age-appropriate writing prompt as an extended art activity, which can be used while others complete their projects. Writing Prompts include word bank words to encourage independent learning. Each lesson also includes an additional extended activity coloring sheet for early finishers.
Each 1st-5th Grade Lesson includes:
- Teacher Lesson Plan aligned to the NCAS
- “I Can” Statement
- Art Supply List
- List of Additional Recommended Art Prints (can be used as an extended research activity)
- Famous Artist Read-aloud Sheet
- Student Project Checklist
- Student Step-by-Step Project Handout
- Full Color Lesson Example
- Art Tells A Story Writing Prompt with a Word Bank
